Locating

Next

This service provides the local information and maps of the current GPS location or any specified location.

The first screen of Locating is for you to specify a location. You can enter "HERE", "H" or "h" for current GPS location (Picture 1) and press softkey "OK" to start GPS positioning (Picture 2) that will get the current date, time, NAC, speed, heading, longitude, latitude, altitude, etc (Picture 3). Since the data will be retrieved from GPS satellites, it may take up to two minutes to get the result. It can make it easy to get the location if you hold the handset still in an open area. If the location is not found, you can try it again. You can also exit the GPS positioning screen by clicking LEFT arrow key on the phone.

With this functionality, you can easily tell or record exactly where you are, where an accident is, where the parking location is, etc. It is actually a time-space watch to tell what time and where it is now.

If you enter a NAC (Picture 4) and press softkey "OK", it will simply convert the NAC to the longitude and latitude and set other parameters to zero.

When you specify a location using a street address, you need to type the entire address including street number, street name, city, province/state, postcode/ZIP and country formatted as shown in Address Format. Picture 5 shows a Canadian street address.

When you specify a location using a street intersection, you need to type the two street names connected with "&" or "$", city, province/state and country as shown on Picture 6.

When you specify a location using a point of interest, you need to type the name of POI, city, province/state and country as shown on Picture 7.

When you specify a location using a postcode/ZIP, you have to input the code and the country as shown on Picture 8.

When you specify a location using a city/town, you have to input the city, provice/state and the country as shown on Picture 9.

Once the location has been specified with a street address, street intersection, point of interest, postcode/ZIP or city, pressing softkey "OK", Locamagic will ask the server to look up the geographic databases to get the NAC, longitude and latitude of the location and set other parameters to zero as shown on Picture 3.

Once the NAC of the location is obtained, you can get the local information such as nearby street addresses, points of interest, city, state, postal code/ZIP, country and continent by pressing softkey "Info" as shown on Picture 10 (note, if the location is specified with a street address, street intersection, POI, postcode/ZIP or city, this screen will be the simple repeat of the input).

Pressing softkey "Map" on Picture 10 will retrieve a local large scale map of the specified location from the server as shown on Picture 11. Pressing softkey "Zoom" will retrieve another map with relatively small scale as shown on Picture 12. The map can also be moved in all directions by pressing arrow buttons.

Pressing softkey "Save" on Picture 12 will send the location to the Locamagic server and also add it into the Addresses list of Locamagic on the cellphone. This is similar to the Tracking service except:
  • it sends the location to the server only once after you press the softkey "Save" while the Tracking service will send the locations periodically at a specified frequency until you stop it on the Tracking service page, and
  • "Save" will also add the location to the Addresses list of Locamagic on the cellphone so that you can review the saved locations on your cellphone while the Tracking Service does not add the locations to the Addresses list.
The "Save" function can be as a field data collection tool. You can use it to record all the interesting locations on a trip. The locations collected through "Save" are temporary on the cellphone and will be lost once you exit Locamagic on your cellphone. However, they are archived on the Locamagic server. You can login on the Locamagic website and click the "Show the cellphone locations" link on the Account Manager page to see the map showing the locations together with the locations sent by the tracking service. These data can be selected and copied to any text editor and save into your computer.

With Locating service, you can not only know where you are but also any location you are interested in.
